Borealis collaborates to establish Indonesia’s first end-to-end circular waste management system

Borealis partners to launch Indonesia’s first end-to-end circular waste management system, advancing recycling and sustainable plastic solutions.

Borouge and Borealis, together with the Catalytic Finance Foundation, Pelita Mekar Semesta, and Reciki Solusi Indonesia, have announced a joint initiative to develop what is expected to become Indonesia’s first fully integrated circular waste management ecosystem. The project supports Borouge and Borealis’ long-term strategy to accelerate the transition toward a circular plastics economy in the country.

The collaboration will begin with a feasibility study financed through the Subnational Climate Fund’s technical assistance program. The study will focus on building a comprehensive waste management and polyolefin recycling system, with the goal of converting plastic waste into valuable raw material for recycling. By applying advanced technologies and industry best practices, the partners aim to produce high-quality recycled polyolefins suitable for a wide range of applications.

PT Pelita Mekar Semesta and PT Reciki Solusi Indonesia bring strong local expertise in waste collection, processing, and recycling operations in Indonesia, which will be critical for implementing solutions suited to local conditions. Borouge and Borealis will contribute technical knowledge and innovation capabilities to enable the production of premium recycled materials.

The partners also plan to collaborate closely with Project STOP—an initiative co-founded by Borealis and Systemiq—which works with governments and communities to design circular waste systems aimed at reducing marine pollution.

Overall, the partnership highlights a shared commitment to creating sustainable waste solutions that address regional challenges. By working alongside financial partners, local industry stakeholders, and communities, the companies aim to reduce environmental leakage of plastic waste while delivering value-added recycled materials to meet growing market demand for sustainable products.
