Delhi CM Rekha Gupta urges plastic industry innovation & recycling

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta calls on the plastic industry to focus on innovation, recycling, and responsible, sustainable growth.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta urged the plastic industry to accelerate innovation and develop eco-friendly manufacturing processes, while working towards the ambitious goal of recycling 100 per cent of plastic waste. She emphasised that sustainability must remain central to the industry’s future growth strategy.

Addressing participants at the 12th International Plastindia 2026 Plastic Exhibition, Conference and Convention, the Chief Minister said the Delhi government is taking concrete steps to strengthen industry, entrepreneurship and sustainable manufacturing, in line with its vision of transforming Delhi into a global city and a strong commercial hub.

Highlighting support for the MSME sector, Gupta said the Delhi government is offering collateral-free loans of up to ₹10 crore, enabling small and medium enterprises to access finance without guarantees. She added that the government has set a target of establishing 5,000 new start-ups, with a special focus on innovation-driven and sustainable solutions within the plastic industry.

The Chief Minister also noted that policies are being simplified to further improve ease of doing business, allowing Delhi to emerge not just as a major consumption centre but also as a recognised trading and distribution hub. She stressed that plastic waste remains a major challenge in making Delhi clean and green, and addressing it will require collective action, supported by advanced recycling technologies and modern waste management systems.

Sharing industry data, Gupta said India’s plastic industry was valued at around USD 44 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 47 billion in 2026, with further growth expected to touch nearly USD 64 billion by 2030. The sector employs millions of people and accounts for about 6 per cent of global plastic consumption, ranking third globally after China and the United States.

“India is rapidly progressing towards becoming a global plastic processing hub,” she said, underscoring the industry’s role in economic growth alongside environmental responsibility.
