Guwahati station gets state-of-the-art plastic waste management system

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has unveiled a groundbreaking plastic waste management system at Guwahati Railway Station, setting it on course to become India’s first fully plastic recyclable station.

This ambitious initiative, part of a three-party Memorandum of Understanding with the Pollution Control Board of Assam and a local recycler, is supported by technical expertise from IIT Guwahati.

NFR’s comprehensive approach includes the introduction of colour-coded bins for waste segregation, bottle crushing machines, composting units, and a QR code-based monitoring system for real-time efficiency tracking. “Eco-friendly compostable bags, developed by IIT Guwahati, have replaced single-use plastics in trains, significantly reducing plastic waste generation,” stated NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer, KK Sharma.

This initiative is a key component of Indian Railways’ Green Mission 2030, aiming to transform Guwahati Railway Station into a model of sustainable operations. To boost public engagement, NFR has launched “Waste-to-Art” exhibitions, street plays, and digital campaigns, resulting in increased environmental awareness and a 60% drop in passenger cleanliness complaints.
