Klöckner Pentaplast secures PSV certification for recycled content in rXPS packaging

Klöckner Pentaplast earns PSV certification for recycled content in rXPS packaging, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and circular packaging solutions.

Klöckner Pentaplast (kp) has reached another important milestone in its sustainability journey after the recycled content used in its rXPS polystyrene trays received Plastica Seconda Vita (PSV) certification at the 10% level.

Plastica Seconda Vita (PSV) is an independent European certification program focused on products manufactured using recycled plastics. The certification verifies both the origin and quality of recycled materials according to ISO 14021 standards, ensuring traceability and responsible sourcing through controlled recycling processes. As one of the first certification schemes of its kind in Europe, PSV offers customers confidence that certified materials meet transparent and credible sustainability criteria.

The certification underlines the performance and sustainability advantages of kp’s rXPS portfolio, which includes various tray formats containing up to 50% recycled polystyrene. These solutions are designed to support protein packaging applications while helping customers move toward more environmentally responsible packaging choices.

The rXPS range has also been developed to align with upcoming European regulatory requirements, including the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). These rules are expected to introduce a minimum recycled content requirement of 10% by 2030 for certain contact-sensitive packaging materials made from polymers other than PET, along with gradual reductions in virgin plastic usage. kp’s certification demonstrates its ongoing efforts to expand the use of responsibly sourced recycled materials across its product offerings.

The recycled material used in kp’s rXPS trays is independently certified at the 10% level, confirming compliance with strict standards related to traceability, quality, and responsible sourcing. Higher levels of recycled content certification can also be provided when required.

According to Paolo Nisci, General Manager and Sales Director for Trays in Italy at kp, the company remains committed to advancing the recyclability of polystyrene and supporting a more sustainable future for the material. He noted that obtaining PSV certification highlights this commitment and recognises the work of kp’s team in developing innovative solutions that help customers achieve their own sustainability targets.

He also emphasized that producing trays with responsibly sourced recycled polystyrene has historically been challenging for the industry, making this achievement an important step forward for both plastic recycling and sustainable packaging.

kp’s rXPS solutions are manufactured in Italy, providing European-produced options for businesses seeking high-performance packaging aligned with sustainability objectives. The product range includes standard trays, modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) trays, and absorbent trays designed for moist protein applications, eliminating the need for separate absorbent pads.
