PureCycle and TOPPAN partner to advance sustainable packaging with recycled content

PureCycle and TOPPAN collaborate to boost sustainable packaging by integrating high-quality recycled content into advanced plastic packaging solutions.

Orlando, Florida — PureCycle Technologies, a U.S. company focused on advanced plastic recycling, has announced a collaboration with global packaging specialist TOPPAN to accelerate sustainable innovation in flexible films and thermoformed packaging.

The partnership responds to increasing demand from brand owners for high-quality recycled materials that meet evolving regulatory standards across global markets. As part of the collaboration, the companies have successfully produced a snack bar wrapper containing more than 30% recycled content. The project demonstrates the performance potential of PureCycle’s recycled polypropylene resin in flexible packaging applications that require strong print quality and functionality.

According to TOPPAN Packaging Americas representatives, the initiative highlights how food safety, regulatory compliance, environmental responsibility, and packaging performance can be advanced simultaneously rather than treated as competing priorities. The newly developed wrapper is designed to meet the expectations of leading snack brands while lowering environmental impact through meaningful recycled material use.

Following this milestone, the two companies plan to expand their work into thermoformed packaging formats, including snack containers, microwaveable trays, and other food-contact products. Many major brand owners are actively seeking recycled material options to meet upcoming sustainability mandates, making this collaboration strategically significant.

TOPPAN’s research and development team emphasized that partnerships like this enable commercially viable packaging solutions that help companies achieve recycled content targets without compromising safety or performance standards.

PureCycle uses a proprietary dissolution-based recycling process that converts post-consumer polypropylene waste into high-purity resin with properties comparable to virgin plastic. The technology removes contaminants such as color, odor, and additives that typically limit the usability of recycled materials. The resulting material meets regulatory requirements for food-contact applications and can be incorporated into existing manufacturing systems without major changes.

Executives from PureCycle noted that combining advanced recycling technology with TOPPAN’s expertise in packaging design and production creates new opportunities for brand owners to meet sustainability commitments while maintaining product quality.
