Taokaenoi partners with SCGC and Dow to pilot advanced recycling for sustainable seaweed packaging solutions.
In a first-of-its-kind partnership, Taokaenoi Food & Marketing Public Company Limited (TKN), SCG Chemicals (SCGC), and Dow Thailand Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance circularity in the snack packaging sector.
The collaboration introduces the “Food-Grade Circular Packaging by Advanced Recycling Technology” initiative, aimed at tackling plastic waste through a closed-loop recycling model. Under this project, multi-layer packaging scrap generated during Taokaenoi’s production process—previously challenging to recycle—will be processed using SCGC’s advanced recycling technology. The recovered material will be transformed into circular feedstock, which Dow will then convert into high-quality, food-grade plastic resins. These resins will be used to manufacture new packaging for Taokaenoi products, completing the recycling loop. Commercial rollout of the new packaging is expected by the end of 2026.
Orrapat Peeradechapan, CEO of Taokaenoi Food & Marketing Public Company Limited, stated that the company remains focused on delivering quality products while integrating ESG principles into its operations. She highlighted that the partnership turns hard-to-recycle packaging waste into a valuable resource, creating practical circular economy solutions. Beyond reducing waste, the initiative aims to generate new value from used plastics and provide consumers with safe, environmentally responsible packaging.
Vichan Tangkengsirisin, President of Dow Thailand, noted that the company is contributing its materials science expertise to produce circular resins derived from advanced recycled feedstock. Dow’s polyethylene facility in Rayong holds ISCC PLUS certification, enabling the production of food-grade circular resins with performance comparable to conventional fossil-based plastics. He emphasized that the collaboration supports efforts to close the plastics loop in Thailand and accelerate sustainable transformation across the value chain.
Overall, the partnership demonstrates a comprehensive approach to managing multi-layer plastic packaging waste. By reducing reliance on virgin materials and limiting plastic accumulation, the initiative supports the sustainability ambitions of Taokaenoi, SCGC, and Dow, while reinforcing the private sector’s role in driving Thailand’s circular economy forward.
