Toray Strengthens Presence in India Through Engineering Plastics Project

Japanese materials manufacturer Toray Industries is planning to establish a new plastics production facility in India as part of its strategy to capitalize on the country’s rapidly growing automotive sector.

The investment reflects increasing confidence among global manufacturers in India’s position as one of the world’s fastest-growing automobile markets.

The proposed facility will focus on the production of high-performance engineering plastics used in automotive applications. These materials are widely utilized in vehicle components due to their lightweight properties, durability, and ability to help improve fuel efficiency and support vehicle electrification. As automakers seek to reduce vehicle weight and enhance performance, demand for advanced plastics continues to grow.

India has emerged as a key growth market for automotive materials, driven by rising vehicle production, increasing consumer demand, and the expansion of electric vehicle manufacturing. Global suppliers are increasingly investing in local production capabilities to serve automakers more efficiently and strengthen regional supply chains.

Toray’s planned investment aligns with the company’s broader strategy of expanding its presence in high-growth Asian markets. The company is a major producer of fibers, textiles, plastics, chemicals, carbon fiber composites, and advanced materials used across industries including automotive, aerospace, electronics, and healthcare.

By establishing manufacturing operations in India, Toray aims to improve responsiveness to customer requirements, reduce logistics costs, and support domestic automotive manufacturers with locally produced materials. The move is also expected to contribute to the development of India’s advanced materials ecosystem and strengthen the country’s manufacturing capabilities.

Industry observers note that demand for engineering plastics is likely to accelerate further as vehicle manufacturers increase the use of lightweight materials to comply with efficiency standards and support the transition toward electric mobility. The new facility is therefore expected to play an important role in meeting future material requirements of India’s automotive industry.
