RBI Begins Trial of ₹10 and ₹20 Polymer Notes in India

New plastic currency pilot aims to improve durability, security and sustainability while reducing replacement costs

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is set to introduce field trials of polymer banknotes for ₹10 and ₹20 denominations, marking a significant step towards exploring more durable and secure currency solutions in India. The initiative aims to evaluate the performance of plastic-based notes before considering any wider adoption.

The Government of India has approved the RBI’s proposal to conduct trials involving one billion polymer notes each of ₹10 and ₹20 denominations. The pilot project will assess factors such as durability, cost efficiency, public acceptance and operational performance. Authorities have clarified that the move is only a trial phase and does not involve replacing existing paper currency at present.

Polymer banknotes are made using a flexible plastic substrate that offers several advantages over traditional paper-based currency. These notes are designed to withstand moisture, dirt and frequent handling, giving them a longer circulation life compared with conventional notes. The extended lifespan could help reduce the frequency of replacement and disposal of damaged currency.

Security features are another major reason behind the global adoption of polymer currency. Countries including Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and Singapore have already introduced polymer notes due to their durability and advanced security characteristics. India’s trial will help determine the suitability of this technology for domestic circulation conditions.

The move also highlights the growing role of advanced polymer technology beyond traditional industrial applications. Polymer materials are increasingly being used in areas requiring high durability, security and performance, including currency, healthcare, packaging and specialised manufacturing sectors.

While digital payments continue to expand across India, cash remains an important part of daily transactions, particularly in many rural and semi-urban regions. The polymer note trial represents an effort to modernise physical currency while maintaining reliability and efficiency in circulation.

If successful, the initiative could open opportunities for advanced polymer manufacturing, currency technology providers and related industries while supporting India’s long-term goals of improving currency management and sustainability.
