Five Alfa Romeo Tonale patrol vehicles in Rome will use connected tyre sensors, computer vision and AI to monitor road conditions and identify potential hazards.
Pirelli is set to test its Cyber Tyre technology on vehicles operated by Italy’s Carabinieri as part of an initiative aimed at monitoring the condition of Rome’s road infrastructure. The agreement involves the installation of the system on five Alfa Romeo Tonale vehicles assigned to the Rome Radiomobile Unit for territorial control and emergency-response activities.
The technology uses sensors embedded inside the tyres to collect information about road conditions. This data will be combined with information captured by cameras installed on the vehicles and processed using computer vision and artificial intelligence. The system is designed to identify road-surface anomalies and issues affecting road signage.
The data generated during the trial will contribute to an updated map of road conditions, helping identify potential risks across the road network. AI algorithms developed by Pirelli’s technology partner Univrses will analyse the camera data alongside information collected through the tyres. The system is designed to operate automatically without requiring intervention from Carabinieri personnel.
Pirelli Executive Chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera said the Cyber Tyre system is designed to operate under the continuous strain and heavy loads experienced by vehicles used by the Radiomobile Unit. The company said the collaboration adds to previous Cyber Tyre road-monitoring projects carried out with Movyon, an Autostrade per l’Italia Group company, and the Apulia regional government.
Pirelli describes Cyber Tyre as a hardware-and-software system that turns the tyre into a connected sensing platform. Information collected by the embedded sensor can be processed through Pirelli’s software and algorithms and transmitted in real time to vehicle systems or dedicated platforms. The technology can also interact with systems such as ABS, electronic stability control and traction control in vehicle applications.
Beyond vehicle-related applications, Pirelli says Cyber Tyre can support infrastructure monitoring by generating road-network health maps. Such information can provide road authorities with data that can be used when assessing maintenance requirements and identifying areas requiring attention.
The Carabinieri trial therefore combines tyre-based sensing with vehicle cameras and AI analysis to collect road information during routine patrol and emergency-response operations. The approach could provide a continuous stream of road-condition data while the vehicles are carrying out their regular duties in Rome.
Pirelli has also been expanding the industrial use of its Cyber Tyre technology. In May 2026, the company announced plans to begin producing connected tyres incorporating Cyber Tyre technology at its Rome, Georgia, facility in the United States, highlighting the technology’s development beyond conventional tyre applications.
