MCPU Introduces Sustainable Polymer Chemistry at Polycon 2026

MCPU Polymer Engineering Introduces ‘Biocongruent Chemistry,’ a New Framework for Sustainable Polymers, at Polycon 2026.

“The industry has been told it must choose between performance and sustainability, and our data says that is a false choice.” Thomas Garrett, Ph.D., CEO and Research Director, MCPU Polymer Engineering. Next week at the CPI 2026 Polyurethanes Technical Conference in Orlando, we’ll introduce biocongruent chemistry, a materials design framework we’ve spent years developing with our research partners.

The idea is simple. Replace 10 to 15 parts of a conventional polyol with soy-, lignin- or silicone-derived additives inside a polymer system that already works. As Dr. Garrett puts it: “A manufacturer can keep the service life its customers pay for, drop the halogenated flame retardants its regulators are scrutinizing, and change how the material behaves when it reaches a landfill without reformulating from scratch.”

What that swap delivered in the data we’ll present:

  • TCPP eliminated from a commercial rigid PIR insulation foam. Flame performance matched under DIN 4102 (B2). R-value, density, yield stress and processing effectively unchanged.
  • Class I-comparable flame spread in polyurethane carpet backing using a soy additive plus a non-halogenated phosphate.
  • Faster biodegradation in soil-burial and field testing, while the material stayed structurally intact through its service life.
  • A biocongruent silicone heater hose carrying roughly one-third the lifetime carbon footprint of its EPDM counterpart, per a cradle-to-grave LCA.

Lead author Saeed Fosshat, Research Staff Scientist, frames the goal this way: “It’s whether we can make the material customers actually need, let it perform for its full service life, and still give nature something it can work with when that life is over.”
