China National Tire and Rubber to Invest $550 Million in Egypt Expansion

China National Tire and Rubber to Invest $550 Million in New Egypt Tire Plant

China National Tire and Rubber Co. is set to expand its footprint in Egypt with a $550 million investment to establish a new tire manufacturing facility in Alexandria, reinforcing the country’s position as a growing industrial hub.

The expansion plan was discussed during a meeting between Egypt’s Minister of Industry, Khaled Hashem, and company representatives led by Chairman Wang Jianjun. The project will be implemented through Promethean Tyres Egypt and will focus on producing tires for heavy-duty transport vehicles, agricultural tractors, and engineering equipment.

In addition to the new facility, the investment includes upgrading and modernizing existing production lines. Once operational, the expansion is expected to add an annual production capacity of 1.5 million tires.

Commercial operations are scheduled to begin in early 2028. The project is expected to generate approximately 1,600 direct jobs, facilitate technology transfer, and strengthen Egypt’s tire export capabilities.

During the discussions, company executives requested government support in securing industrial land, obtaining necessary licenses, facilitating the recruitment of foreign specialists for technical knowledge transfer, and enhancing protection against substandard and dumped imports through stricter anti-dumping measures.

Hashem reaffirmed the Ministry of Industry’s commitment to supporting the expansion and addressing any obstacles through coordination with relevant government agencies. He also emphasized the importance of streamlining industrial licensing procedures to accelerate project implementation.

The minister encouraged the company to expand into passenger car tire manufacturing, highlighting its strategic importance under Egypt’s National Automotive Industry Development Program. He noted that local production of passenger vehicle tires would help reduce imports while strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Hashem further pointed to government policies that prioritize locally manufactured products in public procurement, helping create stronger demand for domestic industrial output.

Sustainability was also a key topic of discussion, with both sides reviewing initiatives related to energy efficiency, water treatment, and water reuse. The minister urged the company to maximize the use of solar energy at the new facility and increase the proportion of locally sourced materials in production.

Wang expressed confidence in Egypt’s investment climate, citing ongoing government efforts to support investors and remove business obstacles. He described the new project as part of the company’s long-term growth strategy in Egypt, building on its existing manufacturing operations in Alexandria.

Looking ahead, Wang said the company plans to broaden its product portfolio to include passenger car tires, targeting rising demand in both the domestic market and export destinations.
