Evonik Advances Chemical Recycling Technologies to Support Circular Plastics Economy

Specialty chemicals company expands innovation efforts in catalysts, additives, and recycling processes to transform plastic waste into valuable raw materials.

Evonik is strengthening its commitment to circularity by advancing a range of technologies designed to improve the chemical recycling of plastics. The company is developing innovative solutions that help convert difficult-to-recycle plastic waste into valuable feedstocks that can be reintroduced into the production cycle, reducing dependence on virgin fossil resources.

Chemical recycling plays an increasingly important role in addressing plastic waste streams that cannot be efficiently processed through conventional mechanical recycling. Through processes such as pyrolysis, depolymerization, and methanolysis, plastic materials can be broken down into their basic chemical building blocks, enabling the production of new plastics and other high-value products.

A key area of focus for Evonik is the development of catalysts, adsorbents, and specialty additives that enhance the efficiency and reliability of recycling operations. These technologies help remove contaminants, improve process stability, increase product yields, and enhance the quality of recycled outputs. The company is also working on solutions that upgrade pyrolysis oil derived from mixed plastic waste, enabling it to serve as an alternative feedstock for petrochemical production.

Evonik is actively pursuing innovations in the recycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), one of the world’s most widely used plastics. The company has been developing advanced chemical recycling methods capable of processing contaminated PET waste that is often unsuitable for mechanical recycling. These technologies can recover valuable monomers that can be reused in the manufacture of new materials.

To accelerate commercialization, Evonik has also entered strategic collaborations aimed at scaling chemical recycling technologies. One such initiative involves partnership efforts focused on developing cost-effective PET recycling solutions that can be integrated into existing production systems while supporting the production of high-quality recycled materials.

The company’s broader Circular Economy Program brings together expertise across multiple industries and value chains to support sustainable resource management. Through investments in recycling technologies, circular feedstocks, and advanced materials, Evonik aims to create new opportunities for reducing waste, lowering carbon emissions, and improving resource efficiency across the plastics industry.

As governments and manufacturers continue to seek solutions for managing growing plastic waste volumes, chemical recycling is gaining momentum as a complementary approach to mechanical recycling. Evonik’s ongoing innovations in this area are expected to contribute to the development of a more sustainable and circular plastics ecosystem while helping industries meet increasingly ambitious environmental goals.
