Sumitomo Riko Starts Low-Emission Fuel Hose Production in India

New multilayer resin hose for Maruti Suzuki Brezza is designed to reduce fuel vapour emissions and meet upcoming BS6 Phase 3 regulations

Sumitomo Riko has begun mass production of a new multilayer resin fuel hose in India after the technology was adopted for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza SUV. The hose is designed to reduce fuel permeation and support compliance with India’s upcoming BS6 Phase 3 emissions regulations, scheduled to be introduced and strengthened from 2027.

The new hose is installed in the fuel line connecting the vehicle’s fuel filler inlet to the fuel tank. Unlike conventional rubber hoses, it uses a multilayer resin structure that helps limit the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) generated by fuel.

Sumitomo Riko said the technology is intended to reduce the environmental impact associated with fuel vapour emissions while also helping address potential health risks linked to VOC exposure. The development reflects the automotive industry’s growing focus on components that can meet increasingly stringent environmental standards.

The adoption of the hose by Maruti Suzuki’s Brezza represents an important application of Sumitomo Riko’s polymer and hose technologies in the Indian automotive market. The company has been expanding its manufacturing capabilities in India as demand grows for advanced automotive hose products that meet evolving emissions and performance requirements.

Sumitomo Riko also recently strengthened its Indian production network with a new automotive hose facility in Bawal, Haryana. The plant was planned to increase the production capacity of its Indian subsidiary by approximately 33% and support supplies to major automotive customers in northern India.

The latest fuel hose development highlights the increasing role of advanced polymer and resin technologies in reducing vehicle emissions. As regulatory requirements become more stringent, automotive component manufacturers are increasingly developing lightweight and high-performance materials that can support cleaner and more efficient mobility.

The initiative also aligns with Sumitomo Riko’s broader strategy of developing products that contribute to next-generation mobility while improving environmental performance, safety and comfort.
