The Ukrainian manufacturer is discussing the possible development of rubber-tyred trams for the Swiss market.
Lviv-based Electron Group is exploring the possibility of manufacturing rubber-tyred trams for Switzerland, according to comments from company president Yuriy Bubes. The potential project would expand Electron’s existing public transport manufacturing activities and create an opportunity to develop vehicles for a specialised international market.
Rubber-tyred trams differ from conventional rail-based trams by using rubber wheels and a guided track system. This type of transport can offer greater flexibility in urban environments and may be considered for routes where traditional tram infrastructure is difficult to install or expand.
Electron already has experience in designing and producing electric public transport vehicles, including low-floor trams, trolleybuses and electric buses. Its tram manufacturing operations are based in Lviv and have supplied vehicles for Ukrainian cities.
The discussions with Switzerland remain at a preliminary stage, and no confirmed production agreement, delivery schedule or technical specifications have been announced. Further details would depend on the outcome of negotiations and the requirements of the potential customer.
The possible Swiss project highlights Electron’s efforts to develop new export opportunities while strengthening Ukraine’s engineering and transport manufacturing capabilities. It could also provide the company with experience in adapting its vehicle technology to different infrastructure and operating conditions.
