Bluestar Silicones Launches Recycled Silicone for Automotive and Industrial Applications

New masterbatch contains 33% mechanically recycled silicone and is designed for demanding applications including cable manufacturing, extrusion and moulded components.

Bluestar Silicones has launched BLUESIL™ MR 460 U 33P, its first mechanically recycled silicone masterbatch, marking a new step in the company’s efforts to expand circular solutions for high-performance silicone applications. The material contains 33% mechanically recycled silicone and is now available for pre-commercial sales.

The new masterbatch has been developed to combine a high level of recycled content with properties comparable to conventional silicone elastomers. Bluestar Silicones said the material offers good surface quality, mechanical performance and processing versatility, making it suitable for applications where both technical performance and recycled content are important.

BLUESIL™ MR 460 U 33P has a transparency level of 77–83% according to ISO 2471, providing a suitable base for colour formulation. The material is intended for demanding automotive and industrial applications, including cable manufacturing, profile and tube extrusion and moulded components.

The launch represents the commercial application of Bluestar Silicones’ mechanical recycling technology, which the company introduced previously as part of its efforts to develop new routes for recovering value from silicone waste. The company said the new material can help customers incorporate recycled silicone into their products while maintaining the performance requirements expected from high-performance silicone materials.

According to Bluestar Silicones, the recycled masterbatch can provide up to a 30% reduction in product carbon footprint compared with conventional alternatives. It can also be compounded with other silicone masterbatches, curing systems, additives and colour masterbatches to meet specific application requirements.

The material is compatible with established silicone processing technologies, including extrusion, injection moulding and compression moulding. Bluestar Silicones is working with selected customers and partners to further validate processing conditions at industrial scale as the product moves toward broader commercial use.

The development comes as manufacturers across automotive, industrial and other sectors face increasing pressure to reduce material-related environmental impacts while maintaining product performance. Silicone is widely used in applications such as electrical insulation, cable protection, transportation components and industrial products because of its resistance to heat and demanding operating conditions.

Bluestar Silicones is also expanding its wider circular silicone portfolio. In July 2026, the company announced that its Saint-Fons facility in France had become the first silicone production site in Europe to receive ISCC PLUS certification, enabling certified circular feedstock allocation through a mass-balance system.

The company said the new mechanically recycled masterbatch strengthens its strategy of offering different pathways toward silicone circularity, combining recycling technologies with solutions that can be integrated into existing manufacturing processes. With recycled content now available in a market-ready masterbatch, the development could give automotive and industrial manufacturers another option for incorporating recycled silicone into future products.
