Plastipak’s Nylon-Free O2Blox Technology Enhances Recyclability of PET Barrier Packaging

Innovative oxygen-barrier solution supports bottle-to-bottle PET recycling while maintaining product protection and shelf life

Plastipak has strengthened its sustainable packaging portfolio with the advancement of O2Blox, a nylon-free PET oxygen-barrier technology designed to improve the recyclability of barrier packaging without compromising performance. The innovation addresses a long-standing challenge in PET packaging by providing oxygen protection for sensitive products while remaining compatible with existing PET recycling systems.

The technology has received recognition from the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) through its Critical Guidance Path program and has also secured RecyClass Technology Approval for clear bottle-to-bottle PET recycling applications. These certifications confirm that O2Blox™ can be processed within established recycling streams, helping preserve the quality of recycled PET material.

Unlike conventional barrier packaging solutions that often rely on nylon layers that can complicate recycling, O2Blox™ uses a nylon-free design that maintains oxygen-barrier performance while supporting circular economy objectives. The technology is particularly suited for oxygen-sensitive products such as juices, ketchup, salad dressings, and functional beverages, where product freshness and shelf life are critical.

Plastipak has already commercialized the technology in collaboration with the Eckes-Granini Group, demonstrating its viability at industrial scale. The company says the solution can support packaging structures containing up to 100% post-consumer recycled PET (PCR), further strengthening efforts to increase recycled content in consumer packaging.

According to Plastipak, O2Blox™ was developed by combining expertise in packaging engineering, sustainability, and manufacturing to create a barrier solution that aligns product protection with recycling system requirements. The company believes the technology will help brand owners meet evolving regulatory expectations around recyclability and recycled content while reducing risks associated with packaging redesign.

As packaging regulations become increasingly focused on circularity, innovations such as O2Blox™ are expected to play a crucial role in enabling high-performance PET packaging that supports both product integrity and efficient recycling, advancing the industry’s transition toward more sustainable packaging systems.
