Mother Dairy Launches India’s First Naturally Degradable Milk Pouch

New packaging innovation aims to tackle plastic waste while maintaining recyclability, product quality, and consumer affordability

Mother Dairy has introduced what it describes as India’s first naturally degradable milk pouch, marking a significant advancement in sustainable packaging for the dairy sector. The new packaging will be rolled out in the Delhi-NCR market from June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day, beginning with the company’s Cow Milk variant.

Developed after more than four years of research, the innovative pouch uses a proprietary degradable packaging technology that enables the material to transform into bioavailable wax, which is subsequently broken down by naturally occurring soil microbes into natural elements. Unlike conventional plastic packaging that can persist in the environment for centuries, the new pouch is designed to degrade in soil within a few years while leaving no trace of plastic residue.

According to Mother Dairy, the new packaging will continue to be recyclable and will not require any changes in how consumers store, handle, or dispose of the product. The company has also assured that the transition to the new pouch will have no impact on milk quality, shelf life, taste, or retail pricing.

Speaking on the development, Mother Dairy said the innovation is intended to address the growing challenge of “fugitive plastic” — plastic waste that escapes collection and recycling systems and eventually enters the environment. By introducing packaging that naturally breaks down in soil, the company aims to reduce the long-term environmental impact associated with the billions of plastic milk pouches used annually across India.

The launch forms part of Mother Dairy’s broader sustainability agenda and reflects increasing efforts within the dairy industry to develop environmentally responsible packaging solutions. The company, which markets approximately 5.5 million litres of milk daily across multiple states, believes the innovation can help set new benchmarks for sustainable packaging while supporting the sector’s transition toward a more circular and environmentally conscious future.
