Parañaque Secures Second Place in Plastic Upcycling Exhibit

Parañaque City’s recognition in a plastic upcycling exhibit highlights the role of creative reuse and community initiatives in turning discarded materials into useful products.

Parañaque City secured second place in a plastic upcycling exhibit, according to a report published by the Manila Bulletin on October 11, 2026. The recognition highlights efforts to transform discarded plastic materials into products with practical value and demonstrates how local initiatives can encourage resource recovery and waste reduction.

Upcycling involves converting waste materials into new products that can serve useful purposes rather than allowing them to be discarded. In the case of plastic waste, this approach can give materials a second life through creative design, product development and community-based activities.

Parañaque has previously supported initiatives that promote the reuse of discarded materials. The city’s Environment and Natural Resources Office has developed products such as bags, slippers, coin purses, decorative items and other goods using materials including plastic, cardboard, glass, metal, sachets and discarded textiles. These activities have also provided opportunities for community participation and livelihood generation.

The city has also participated in plastic recycling initiatives aimed at converting collected plastic waste into construction materials. In 2022, Parañaque partnered with Mondelez International, Green Antz and the Philippine Business for Social Progress on a facility designed to process plastic waste into ecobricks for use in building applications.

Recognition at a plastic upcycling exhibit can help increase awareness of the value of waste materials and encourage residents, organisations and businesses to explore practical reuse solutions. Such efforts can complement recycling programmes by promoting responsible material use and supporting circular-economy practices at the local level.

Parañaque’s second-place achievement underscores the potential of local creativity and environmental initiatives to contribute to more sustainable waste management. By encouraging discarded plastics to be viewed as potential resources, upcycling programmes can support waste reduction while creating opportunities for community engagement and innovative product development.
