Pirelli North America has introduced its first closed-loop tire recycling program in North America as part of its ongoing efforts to expand the use of recycled and bio-based materials in tire production.
The initiative centers on recovering scrap tires generated during manufacturing operations in the region. These discarded materials are processed by Bolder Industries through advanced pyrolysis technology to produce ISCC Plus-certified recovered carbon black known as BolderBlack.
Pirelli then incorporates the recovered material into the production of new tires at its North American facilities. The company stated that the project is part of a larger strategy to develop industrial ecosystems that convert waste into reusable raw materials for integration across its global manufacturing network. By partially replacing virgin carbon black with recovered alternatives, the initiative aims to improve resource efficiency while maintaining product quality and performance standards.
Claudio Zanardo, CEO of Pirelli North America, noted that the company’s Rome, Georgia manufacturing plant is among its most advanced facilities and said the initiative represents a step toward increasing the use of recycled materials within existing production systems. The collaboration has also received recognition from the Tire Recycling Foundation, earning a Circle of Change Award in the Value Chain Collaboration category. Bolder Industries CEO Tony Wibbeler stated that the partnership demonstrates the scalability of a traceable tire-to-tire recycling model capable of meeting performance and certification requirements in premium tire manufacturing.
