Industry-led Flexible Plastic Fund aims to strengthen collection, sorting, and recycling infrastructure ahead of nationwide flexible plastic recycling reforms in the UK.
The Flexible Plastic Fund (FPF) has launched a new initiative aimed at advancing the recycling of flexible plastic packaging across the United Kingdom, marking another significant step toward building a circular economy for one of the packaging industry’s most challenging waste streams. The initiative seeks to improve the collection, sorting, and reprocessing of flexible plastics while supporting the UK’s broader sustainability and recycling targets.
Flexible plastic packaging, widely used for food products, pouches, wrappers, and films, has traditionally been difficult to recycle due to its lightweight structure and complex material composition. The new FPF program brings together manufacturers, retailers, recyclers, local authorities, and packaging stakeholders to create a more effective recycling system and increase the value of recovered materials.
Building on the success of the FlexCollect project, the UK’s largest flexible plastic collection and recycling pilot, the initiative aims to generate valuable data and operational insights that can support the rollout of household flexible plastic collections expected under the UK’s Simpler Recycling reforms. The project has already demonstrated how coordinated action across the value chain can improve recovery rates and strengthen domestic recycling capabilities.
The move comes at a crucial time as the UK packaging sector adapts to evolving regulations, including Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), Simpler Recycling requirements, and broader circular economy objectives. Industry experts believe that expanding recycling infrastructure and creating stable end markets for recycled flexible plastics will be essential for achieving long-term sustainability goals.
The initiative also aligns with growing investment in plastic recycling infrastructure across the UK. Recent investments by major recycling companies and industry partnerships highlight increasing momentum toward developing domestic recycling capacity and reducing reliance on virgin plastic materials.
By fostering collaboration across the packaging value chain, the Flexible Plastic Fund hopes to accelerate the transition toward a fully circular system where flexible plastic packaging is collected, recycled, and reused on a much larger scale, helping reduce waste and support the UK’s environmental commitments.
