Volvo Trucks has taken another step toward sustainable manufacturing by significantly increasing the use of recycled plastics in its next-generation heavy-duty trucks. The initiative highlights the growing role of recycled polymers in the automotive industry as manufacturers work to reduce carbon emissions, conserve natural resources, and support circular economy goals.
The company’s latest Volvo VNL and Volvo VNR truck models incorporate several components manufactured using post-industrial recycled plastics. One of the most notable examples is the front wheel splash shield, which is now produced using 75% recycled plastic. Volvo says this change helps reduce the environmental impact associated with producing virgin plastic while maintaining the strength and durability required for heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
Beyond the splash shield, Volvo plans to expand the use of recycled plastics to 44 additional dashboard and interior components in future production. These materials will be sourced from recycled plastic streams within the United States, supporting domestic recycling infrastructure while reducing demand for newly manufactured polymers.
The increased adoption of recycled plastics is part of Volvo’s broader strategy to embed circular design principles throughout its manufacturing operations. Rather than relying solely on virgin raw materials, the company is focusing on incorporating recovered materials that can deliver the same level of performance, safety, and reliability expected in commercial trucks.
Alongside recycled plastics, Volvo is also integrating recycled textiles, sustainably sourced wood, and other renewable materials into its vehicles. However, recycled polymers remain a key focus due to their ability to reduce waste, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and extend the lifecycle of plastic materials that might otherwise end up in landfills.
Industry experts view the move as a significant example of how recycled plastics are becoming increasingly important in automotive manufacturing.
