Sifi Ghrieb on Wednesday inaugurated the “General Plastic Injection” (GPI) industrial unit in Tissemsilt, marking a significant step in Algeria’s push to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities in the automotive sector.
The project, launched under directives from Abdelmadjid Tebboune, is designed to expand local production of plastic automotive components and reduce reliance on imports.
The inauguration took place during an official visit to the province and was attended by Saïd Sayoud and Yahia Bachir, along with regional authorities and industry stakeholders. The facility is situated in the Sidi Mansour industrial zone in Khemisti and covers an area exceeding 107,000 square metres, making it one of the more substantial industrial installations in the region.
Officials described the GPI unit as part of a broader national initiative to reactivate confiscated or underutilised assets and bring them back into productive use. This policy aims not only to recover economic value from previously seized properties but also to transform them into engines of industrial growth, employment generation, and regional development. By reintegrating such assets into the formal economy, the government hopes to strengthen national value chains and reduce structural inefficiencies.
The plant will focus on manufacturing a wide range of plastic components used in vehicle production, supporting Algeria’s ambition to increase local integration within its automotive industry. By supplying domestically produced inputs, the facility is expected to lower the country’s import bill, enhance supply chain resilience, and encourage the growth of ancillary industries linked to automotive manufacturing.
Beyond production, the project also aligns with Algeria’s strategy to attract industrial partnerships and facilitate technology transfer. During the visit, discussions were held with economic operators on potential collaborations, innovation adoption, and adherence to international production standards. These efforts are intended to modernise the sector, improve competitiveness, and position Algeria as a more attractive destination for industrial investment.
The Prime Minister reviewed the implementation phases of the project and emphasised the importance of timely execution, operational efficiency, and integration with broader industrial policies. Authorities noted that initiatives like the GPI unit are critical to building a more self-reliant industrial ecosystem, capable of meeting domestic demand while gradually expanding export potential.
Overall, the launch of the GPI facility underscores Algeria’s commitment to industrial diversification, localisation of manufacturing, and long-term economic resilience, particularly within the strategically important automotive sector.
